The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
