Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts down to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," he commented. "Including them were thousands of British troops on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
